The detectors of the SMART project, of the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC), they have registered the passage of a fireball through the south of the peninsula to 82,000 km/h. According to the analysis of the principal investigator of the SMART project, José María Madiedo, from the IAA-CSIC, the fireball was recorded last Sunday November 7 at 11:30 p.m.

The car was produced entering the earth’s atmosphere at high speed a rock from an asteroid at 82,000 kilometers / hour over the province of Jaén.

Due to this high speed, the sudden friction with the air made the rock turn incandescent. when he was at an altitude of about 92 kilometers almost on the vertical of the town of Bobadilla (Jaén). From there the fireball advanced in a northwesterly direction, become extinct when it was at an altitude of about 44 kilometers almost on the vertical of the town of Montoro (Córdoba).

The fireball was detected from the astronomical observatories of Seville and La Sagra and Sierra Nevada (Granada), Calar Alto (Almería) and La Hita (Toledo).

The SMART project detectors operate within the framework of the Southwest Europe Fireball and Meteor Network (SWEMN), which aims to continuously monitor the sky in order to record and study the impact against the Earth’s atmosphere of rocks from different objects in the Solar System.
