Brazil Antimonopoly Service Interested in Apple

Reuters: Apple sued in Brazil for abuse of dominance

In Brazil, they will sort out a complaint against Apple related to the company’s dominant position in the market. It is reported by Reuters.

According to journalists, the complaint was filed by the e-commerce operator MercadoLibre, one of the largest companies in Latin America. Apple has imposed a number of restrictions on the distribution of digital goods and in-app purchases, the statement said. In this regard, MercadoLibre’s lawyers stressed that the corporation is abusing its dominant position in the market.

In connection with the complaint of the South American firm, the local antitrust service CADE became interested in Apple’s actions. The organization has already noted that similar proceedings against Tim Cook Corporation are taking place in other countries – the European Union, the UK, South Korea, Japan, India and Indonesia. The journalists contacted Apple for a comment, but did not receive a prompt response.

According to Reuters experts, similar proceedings with the position of Apple, held in the United States, ended in favor of the manufacturer of iPhone and Mac. As a rule, the courts came to the conclusion that the restrictions imposed by the corporation are aimed at protecting users.

On January 17, the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia fined Apple 1.2 billion rubles for abuse of dominance. The company will have to pay the fine within two months from the date the document on the imposition of the fine comes into force.
