The Last of Us is HBO’s new hit. Is the series a faithful adaptation of the game? It’s worth making sure of it

Behind us is the premiere of the first episode of “The Last of Us”, a new HBO production in which we follow the fate of heroes fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic and brutal world overrun by a pandemic of a mysterious mushroom.

The series they are producing Neil Druckman (creative director at Naughty Dog) and Craig Mazin (creator of the miniseries “Chernobyl”) receives excellent reviews. The average rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 99 percent at the moment.

Reviewers and viewers praise “The Last of Us” m.in. for the visual layer, atmosphere and excellent acting. Many people emphasize that we are dealing with the best and at the same time the most faithful adaptation of a video game in history, which draws heavily from its original.

As you can easily guess, “The Last of Us” tells the story of the first installment of Naughty Dog’s game. The series is a closed whole. This means that we will get to know the full story of Joel and Ellie’s journey together. It is possible, however, that the HBO production will also take on the “Left Behind” add-on, which is a kind of prequel to “The Last of Us”.

What about the second installment of the game? That’s a completely different story that the HBO series doesn’t cover. Of course, if the production turns out to be a commercial success (which it looks like), we can expect its continuation. For now, however, Druckman and Mazin have not confirmed that a second season will be made.

“The Last of Us”. “Original”, remaster or remake?

The premiere of “The Last of Us” naturally caused interest in Naughty Dog games to increase again. People who have not dealt with the world of “TLOU”, however, may have quite a problem with determining which “version” of the game is the best – there are several of them.

Some confusion may also be caused by the fact that “The Last of Us: Part I” premiered after “The Last of Us: Part II”. Does this mean that the second part of the game was created first, and only then the first? We’re already translating.

“The Last of Us: Part I” (2022)

In 2022, Sony released “The Last of Us: Part I”, a faithful remake of the first installment of the game. The plot layer remained intact. Significant improvements have been made to the graphics (the game is based on the engine used by “TLOU: Part II”) and gameplay.

If you are the owner of PlayStation 5, it is definitely worth starting your adventure with the world of TLOU from the last version, and after finishing it, start “The Last of Us: Part II”. However, if you play on PlayStation 4, you have to start with “The Last of Us: Remastered” from 2014. Although the remaster is old, it has aged quite well.
