He added that, in the last two years, the conditions and characteristics in which these deaths occur have varied, since they occurred more dangerously in contexts of criminal economies, territorial disputes between drug gangs, a high prevalence of crime, and misogynistic forms against life and bodies.

Of the 332 women, at least 48 reported a history of violence, 9 had help sheets, 16 women were previously victims of sexual violence, and 25 were reported missing.

In addition, 14 were pregnant, and 4 out of 10 were mothers.

Of the cases, at least 311 were Ecuadorian, 9 Venezuelan, 5 Colombian and one Peruvian. 26 were Afro-descendants, 14 indigenous and 276 mestizas.

Of those guilty of femicides, 3 attempted suicide and there were 22 suicides.

Guayas, Manabí and Esmeraldas are the provinces where the highest number of femicides occurred. In Guayaquil there were 77 cases and Esmeraldas had 19.

In six out of ten cases a firearm was used to kill a woman.

“We demand that the competent authorities, both at the national and local levels, generate effective actions to prevent violence against women, at least in the cantons where the highest incidence is recorded,” he said.

Sonia Salamea, from Cuenca, mother of Cristina Palacios, said that her daughter was murdered in 2017 by a co-worker, who after several months of trial was sentenced to 34 years and 8 months in prison.

He questioned whether the murderer should be in the Turi prison, but would have been taken to Azogues after receiving a habeas corpus.

Katherine Cuasquer, from Ibarra, was the mother of Zoe, who—she pointed out—was killed by a police officer. She was 7 months old.

Two hitmen on a motorcycle approached and shot him in April of last year. She was his only daughter. The person responsible would have been the girl’s father. There are four involved. The trial for this case will be on January 24.

Families and social organizations requested the Government to comply with the delivery of bonds for femicide, as well as reparation measures.

This is because in 2022 there were 245 cases of orphanhood due to femicide, as mentioned by Mayra Tirira, from the Surkuna foundation.

In 2021 there were 197 femicides; in 2020, 118; in 2019, 106; in 2018, 88; and in 2017, 153, according to figures from social organizations. (YO)
