Apple has been taking steps to get it for several years now total control over the manufacturing process of the devices. Processors came first. While iPhones and iPads have been using it almost since the dawn of time proprietary layouts of AUntil recently, MacBooks and iMacs were based on Intel processors.
The situation changed in 2020, when the company introduced the first models of computers equipped with M1 processor. Currently from copyright Apple chips based on the ARM architecture most of the devices offered by Apple with MacOS – including MacBook Pro, iMac, or Mac Studio – use it.

that soon the company, led by Tim Cook, intends to go a step further and start production microLED screens for new devices. The first effects of this work are to be seen in 2024, when the next iteration of the Apple Watch Ultra will have its premiere, equipped with a “designed in California” display.
Bloomberg also reports that Apple began work on the MicroLED screen in 2018. In turn, four years earlier, the company took over the startup LuxView specializing in this technology. It is also worth recalling that last year there were reports that they would be equipped with an ultra-thin MicroLED screen.
Currently, screens for Apple devices are supplied by many different manufacturers. For example, according to the findings of the South Korean website ETNews, OLED displays for iPhone 14 are produced by LG, Samsung and BOE.
It is worth noting that even after switching to proprietary technology, Apple will still outsource the production of screens to third parties. However, the concern will exercise control over the production process. We are dealing with a similar situation in the case of A and M processors. These are also designed in Cupertino, but their production is carried out by other companies – primarily the TSMC concern.
Interestingly, the transition to MicroLED technology does not have to mean a complete abandonment of OLED matrices for Apple. one of the best-informed sources on matters regarding the Cuperitno-based company, the first MacBooks equipped with organic OLED displays are to be launched in 2024.
