british company Dyson will launch its Zone headphone/air filter combo in early 2023. The eye-catching active noise canceling (ANC) headset with removable air filter unit was introduced last March and was expected to retail for around $900.
The filter unit attaches magnetically to the headphones, surrounding the mouth and nose for support, but not resting on them. The doubly purified air exits through said removable visor. The air supply stops when the air is pushed down or completely withdrawn.
According to the manufacturer, electrostatic filtration captures up to 99% of particles down to 0.1 microns in size, such as dust, pollen, and bacteria. A second potassium-enriched carbon filter purifies the air of gases such as nitrogen dioxide or ozone. The manufacturer guarantees for the filters up to one year of duration.
In addition to air pollution, Zones are also intended to counteract noise pollution. According to Dyson, the ANC system in the Bluetooth 5.0 headphones works with eight microphones and is capable of attenuating disturbing ambient noise by up to 38 decibels (dB). At 595 grams, the headphones are quite heavy, with another 75 grams added when the air filter is attached.
The headphones’ 2,600 mAh battery fully charges via USB-C in three hours. This is enough for up to 50 hours of listening to audio only or up to four hours of combined audio and filter operation at the lowest airflow velocity. Combined usage time drops to 2.5 hours at medium speed and 1.5 hours at high speed.
An acceleration sensor in the earcups monitors user activity and automatically adjusts airflow speed when in auto mode.
The combo also features head and ear sensing to save power, so the Zone can go into standby mode when not wearing it, or go into audio-only mode when the visor with the filter is pushed down a bit. or is withdrawn entirely.
An integrated sensor monitors nitrogen dioxide levels. The MyDyson app allows you to view them along with the ambient noise level. Airflow, ANC, some audio equalizer modes, and a volume limit can also be controlled via the app. (YO)
