Huawei invests in Ecuadorian talent for ICT development

Huawei will continue to invest in the development of digital talent in Latin America and the Caribbean, and will steadily bring its talent initiatives such as Semillas para el Futuro to version 2.0, a senior company executive said.

The Chinese company has launched a series of ICT talent programs with its global partners to cultivate the digital talent of the future and promote inclusive talent development. Huawei advocates for an open, shared and inclusive talent ecosystem.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, they have partnered with some 200 universities to

help train over 50,000 digital talent in the last few years.

In his speech at the 2022 Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Summit, Michael Xue, Huawei Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean, said the company is committed to updating and constantly invest in talent initiatives to include more up-to-date content.

“The digital world continues to evolve at a rapid pace, therefore it is important that we constantly update talent initiatives and continue to invest in the growth of the digital talent pool for Latin America and the Caribbean,” he said at the forum of the Summit organized jointly by Huawei, OREALC (Regional Office of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean) of UNESCO, and the international news agency EFE.

‘Seeds for the Future’ is Huawei’s flagship corporate social responsibility program with the aim of facilitating knowledge transfer and increasing public interest in telecommunications.

The program was launched in 2008 in Thailand and has since expanded to 130 countries and regions, benefiting 8,774 digital talents from around the world.

In Ecuador, Huawei has partnered with Senescyt and the most important universities in the country to provide training in ICT such as 5G and offer internships to local students. Their goal is to help train at least 3,000 talents in the next three years.

This year, 19 young Ecuadorians from different universities traveled for a week to Bogotá, Colombia to receive classes and receive training on issues related to the ICT industry at the prestigious Universidad de Los Andes. Along with the training, they received the Engineering Leadership Program supported by the Gordon Engineering Leadership Program of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

In addition, students participated in the Tech4Good contest, a contest designed to help young adults learn about the latest trends in digitization and explore how digital technologies can address common societal problems. Through Tech4Good, participants boost their creativity, hone their entrepreneurial skills, and develop a sense of social responsibility. All of this, through a fun team effort while being coached by Huawei experts and world-renowned social impact leaders.

This year, students from Ecuador shared the online program with contemporaries from Mexico and Nigeria for a whole week. Of the 3 countries, the best team was an Ecuadorian: The ‘Darwin’s Finches’ group, made up of students from the Carchi Polytechnic University and the National Polytechnic School. (YO)
