Either a new account or an additional fee for a user outside the same household – this is what Netflix wants to introduce in the new year to limit account sharing.
In some countries, these fees have already been introduced. It’s about, among others o Argentina, El Salvador or Guatemala, where people outside the household have to pay an additional $2.99 a month for using the same account.
it appears that at the beginning of 2023 a similar solution will also appear in the USA, although in this case the amount of the subsidy is not yet known. And what is the situation in Poland? It turns out that – so far – no additional fees threaten us.
Netflix in Poland. There will be no surcharge, but…
Its content shows that one account can “share people living in the same household”.
People who don’t live in your household will need to sign up for their own Netflix account
– we read in the regulations.
Does this mean a definitive end to sharing accounts by people who do not live together in the same place? Not completely. Netflix leaves a loophole here:
If you log in to your account from a device outside of your household or use such a device continuously, we may ask you to verify that device before you can use Netflix on it, or to change your Netflix household. By doing so, we confirm that the account can be used on this device
This means that people who share an account and do not live together periodically they will be asked to enter a four-digit code, which will be sent to the email or phone number associated with the primary account holder’s account. This code will have to be entered on the website within 15 minutes.
You may be asked to verify your device from time to time
explains Netflix.
Importantly, the website’s regulations contain clear information that there is no mention of introducing additional fees for sharing an account – in the case of Poland – for now.
Netflix won’t automatically charge you if you share an account with someone who doesn’t live with you.
– we read in the regulations.
How does Netflix detect if devices are in the same household?
We use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity on devices logged into your Netflix account.
the website explains.
What about people who travel or change their place of residence from time to time? Netflix reassures that in this case “verification of the device used to use the Netflix service should not be necessary”.
If you haven’t been in your Netflix household for a long time, we may ask you to verify your device from time to time. By doing so, we confirm that the account can be used on this device.
– we read.
100 million people share accounts on Netflix
In April last year, Netflix announced that z account sharing feature The service is used by up to 100 million people. That’s almost half of over 221 million active subscriptions. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings admitted that the platform has always had account-sharing users, but over the years of dynamic growth, the problem was “not a high priority for us.”
