A new function of the mObywatel application. Users are to be protected against identity theft

The new ones proposed by the government are intended not only to better protect the identity of citizens, but also to limit the negative effects of its theft. As the government’s representative for cybersecurity, Janusz Cieszyński, emphasizes on the website, “the draft regulations will block the possibility of pursuing claims granted despite the reservation made. This will relieve people whose identity has been stolen from the need to defend against debts that arose as a result of criminal activity.”

mCitizen. The identity of users will be better protected

On December 13, the Minister of Digitization submitted a draft act amending certain acts in connection with the prevention of identity theft. The legislator’s proposal assumes the creation of a special register containing information on restricted PESEL numbers. Companies that deal with granting loans, i.e. credit unions or loan companies, will be required to check whether the applicant’s data is included in this register. This also applies to notaries. – If they do not ensure this, they will not be able to pursue claims against the person who fell victim to identity theft and reported this fact, and yet the thief managed to extort money or conclude a contract using the stolen ID – explains Janusz Cieszyński.

The new regulations are not only intended to significantly reduce the number of crimes in which someone’s stolen identity was used. They are primarily intended to limit losses resulting from such extortion and other consequences of this type of theft. The project prepared by digitization will soon be sent for consultation.

Identity claim. How can I use the feature?

The function of reserving a PESEL number will be available to people who have the mObywatel application on their smartphones or those who use the website from a computer. For people who do not use both the mobile application and the computer equivalent, an option has been prepared to submit a written application via the commune office. In order to submit such an application, you only need to present a document confirming your identity, e.g. a passport, other than an identity card.
