How often is it advisable to change computers and why?

Many signs usually appear on our computer when it is time to change it. The applications start to get slow, the device’s memory fills up or the operating system updates are too heavy for our machine.

The computer has a useful life, which varies depending on how good it was at the time of purchase and how much money we invested in it. If it is an essential tool for our work or studies, the moment its performance declines is the moment to analyze acquiring a new, more efficient and advanced one.

Although several technological experts believe that it is difficult to establish a useful time for each computer, since it depends on the model, manufacturer and the use that the user gives it, there are differences between a PC and a laptop.

How often is it advisable to change PC?

PCs, or desktop computers, typically last much longer than a laptop. Its life time is indicated between seven and ten years if the user takes care of it and gives it the necessary maintenance.

Another reason PCs last longer is because they have different components that can be easily replaced to optimize usage. This is the case of the hard drive, RAM memory, batteries, graphics cards and even monitors, which are replaced separately and modernize the computer according to our requirements.

Why it always works to restart devices

However, if we use it with design and editing programs or for gaming, its updates will eventually become too heavy for the computer. In that case, technicians recommend changing it every five years.

How often is it advisable to change laptops?

Laptops or portable computers are replaced faster than desktop computers but last longer than smartphones. Users usually start making complaints about its performance four years after buying it new.

Its lifetime also depends on whether we take care of the laptop it needs: turning it off after each use, not downloading programs that are incompatible with the system, not overloading it or letting it ‘die’, among others. If they are well cared for and we use them only to surf the internet and handle documents, laptops can last around seven years.

What happens if we work with heavy programs? A high-end or mid-range computer that constantly uses design and editing applications can be kept efficient for about five years with proper maintenance. (YO)
