Wccftech: smartphones with removable batteries may return to the European market
Over the next few years, smartphones with removable batteries may appear on the European market. This is reported by the publication Wccftech.
Media journalists studied the new bill, which is being developed by EU officials. The creators of the document want to require gadget manufacturers to equip their devices with batteries that can be easily serviced and replaced. According to experts, in this way, phones with a replaceable battery can return to the European market.
The text of the bill takes into account many aspects regarding the use of the battery – the life cycle of the battery, the extraction of materials, disposal. It is assumed that a QR code can be applied to the battery, by scanning which, the user will be able to find out information about the component and places where the battery can be repaired or a new one can be bought.
“The idea of replacing my phone’s battery sounds great, but knowing companies like Apple and Samsung, it won’t be easy,” the reporters said. Nowadays, almost all modern smartphones on the market have non-removable batteries. In turn, phones with a replaceable battery were common at the beginning of the 21st century.
In early October, European officials set a deadline for the transition of all gadgets to the universal USB-C connector. Smartphone manufacturers must equip their new gadgets with a USB-C port no later than November 2024.
