The European Parliament wants to talk to Elon Musk

The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, was to announce her desire to meet Elon Musk during a closed-door meeting. This is to be a response to the request of MEPs from the liberal group Renew.

“There are good reasons to believe that the standards applied so far by the government may deteriorate at a time when the fight against election interference, disinformation and hate speech is more important than ever,” wrote MPs Dita Charanzová and Sophie in ‘t Veld in letter to the President of 8 November. “Although the exact intentions of the new owner of Twitter are not fully known, his words and actions give cause for concern,” added the MPs.

Will Twitter meet European privacy standards?

MEPs want to hear in person about Elon Musk’s plans for the future of Twitter and remind him of Europe’s rules governing the technology. has some of the strictest privacy laws. A new law to crack down on illegal content, known as the Digital Services Act, is likely to apply to Twitter as early as summer 2023. However, it remains to be seen whether European regulators will be able to hold Elon Musk accountable.

According to the portal’s sources, the official invitation could be sent on November 24. Top European officials have yet to discuss the details of the plan.
