Apple will start making processors in the US

CNBC: Apple to set up production of processors at TSMC factories in the US

Apple announced the use of US-made chips in its gadgets. This is reported by CNBC.

The beginning of the production of American chips was announced by the head of the company, Tim Cook, at an event in Arizona, which was also attended by US President Joe Biden. “And now, thanks to the hard work of so many people, these chips will be proudly labeled ‘Made in America’,” Cook said, calling the production “incredibly important.”

Two semiconductor plants will be owned by TSMC, the Taiwanese company will invest about $40 billion in them. At the same time, enterprises will be partially subsidized from the US budget. The first plant is expected to open in 2024 and the second in 2026.

“Apple had to buy all the advanced chips from abroad, now they are going to bring home a significant part of their supply chain,” President Joe Biden commented on the plans of the corporation. According to Biden, this could change the rules of the game in the market. Journalists noted that most of Apple’s processors are made in Taiwan, which causes concern among US and European authorities in case of regional problems.

In early December, sources told CNBC that Apple was considering moving some iPad production from China to India. Such a decision may be taken against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between the US and China.
