Qwerty keyboard: what it is and how it works

Currently we see how in electronic devices there are several types of keyboards among which we can highlight the standard computer keyboards that are used when we use a computer, in this case there are several distributions and where the keyboard QWERTY It is the one we can see the most. Its popularity makes us wonder where it comes from and how it is used. We are going to delve deeper into its history.

The QWERTY keyboard, the most used in the world

We have many computer keyboards, which use different dimensions and key arrangements, which, as we spoke at the beginning, have the most popular QWERTY. It was designed in 1968 and is named for the first six letters in the top row.

The idea behind the construction of the keyboard is that the traditional typewriter had the keys arranged alphabetically and the keys took a little time to return to their original position due to gravity and that when other keys were pressed, they collided with the ones that were going down.

The idea was to reorder the keys so that the most commonly used keys were in more widely separated positions to avoid the problems that the typewriter had. All a show of ingenuity aimed at avoiding key jams.

The QWERTY keyboard isn’t unique

It has several versions, in some versions they have more letters than in others, since in some languages there are keys that others do not include, for example the letter «ñ» that is not, for example, in English keyboards.

Although the influence of this type of keyboard is worldwide, not all QWERTY keyboards are identical. We can say that the Ñ of Spanish is the Ç of Portuguese. It is striking that in the French version, Q and W take the place of A and Z, and the description of the AZERTY keyboard is renamed. The Z and Y are modified in German, called QWERTZ.

Although attempts were made to weaken the historical potency of the QWERTY keyboard with the 2006 Colemak modifying 17 site keys to match the most frequent letters on the strongest fingers or the KALQ that mobile devices have and that makes the typing speed more agile using the thumbs. All of them did not have the necessary popularity. In the end, people have not wanted to change.

We hope that after this post you already know more clearly the history of the QWERTY keyboard and the reasons why it has been and is so successful. A classic that has stood the test of time for years.
