Mykola Kniazhicki, People’s Deputy of Ukraine from the “European Solidarity” party, informs about this on his Facebook profile. He writes that “the Ukrainian language has become the trend of 2022 on Duolingo. More than 1.3 million people have started learning it.”

According to data published by the company, interest in learning the Ukrainian language peaked in late March 2022, right after and is still ongoing.

“After it invaded Ukraine in February, more than 1.3 million people around the world started learning Ukrainian as a gesture of solidarity. Interest in learning Ukrainian and using Ukrainian in emergencies skyrocketed in the weeks following the start of the war, peaking towards the end March and staying at a constant level until the end of 2022,” reads the report prepared by Duolingo.

The report also mentions service kyivindependent.com: “Duolingo reported that the number of people learning Ukrainian and Polish has increased over 16 times this year compared to last year.”

Duolingo is an electronic language learning and text translation crowdsourcing platform with a free mobile app and website featuring over 30 languages ​​for online learning.

Where is the greatest interest in the Ukrainian language?

The greatest interest in learning the Ukrainian language is observed both in countries distant from the conflict, e.g. in , Japan or Vietnam, and among Ukraine’s closest neighbors.

As we read in the Duolingo report, a significant increase was recorded in the countries hosting the largest number of Ukrainian refugees. “In the six months after the invasion, the number of people learning Ukrainian increased by 1,651 percent year-on-year in Germany, 1,615 percent in Poland and 1,515 percent in the Czech Republic” – the experts conclude.
