the neighbors of El Campillo (Huelva) denounce that the drought in their area is caused by a controversial hail cannon installed by a farmer to protect his crops. They believe that the waves emitted by the device to break up the hail drive away the precipitation.
There has been so much controversy that the Local Police of El Campillo have had to broadcast a video of the canyon so that the neighbors are not scared by the noise it emits.
The manufacturer of the cannon explains to laSexta that the device works with a mixture of acetylene and oxygen gas, which causes an explosion. David Olivier, general director of the SPAG group, affirms that the hail breaks up when it meets the waves generated by the canyon.
However, science does not support the use of this device. Juan Esteban Palenzuela, delegate of AEMET, affirms that the cannons “have no scientific basis“. What’s more, in a report they have assured that its use is not effective to guarantee the destruction of hail.
In addition, the AEMET clarifies: there is no scientific evidence that this cannon keep the rain away nor that it has effects on the local climate.
