He still resigns from Wimbledon and explains. “I am very sad”

After Thursday morning training and medical examination, the prospect of Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal seemed more and more real. This is the sixth time in the Spaniard’s career that he says goodbye to the Grand Slam tournament in London before its end. He himself admitted that he was unable to play another match with a 7mm gash on his stomach.

Still explains the decision to withdraw from Wimbledon

Still explained the reasons for his resignation at a press conference. The main reason turned out to be his stomach, which he had already felt during the quarter-final match with Taylor Fritz. Despite the pain and more than four hours on the court, the Spaniard won this clash and advanced to the semi-finals.

– I have had this injury since last week and everything has actually happened. Yesterday, when serving at 3: 1, I noticed that it started to deteriorate, and when serving at 4: 3, things looked even worse. I had to reduce the speed of the serve and movements in order not to deepen the wound – said Nadal during the conference.

As for quitting the game, Nadal openly admitted that “he cannot continue his participation now.” – I hope to get some rest and regenerate in the next few weeks. My goal is to play. I hope that I will be able to train and meet my schedule – he added.

He still thinks about ending his career

Later in his speech, the Spanish explained how he made his decision. – I spent the whole day figuring out what to do, but there is no point in playing because the injury is getting worse. I made that decision because I don’t think I could have won that way. It’s not that I won’t be able to compete with others, but also that I can’t make a normal move to serve, he described.

Finally, Nadal referred to the future. – I cannot risk this way and expose myself to a 2-3 month break. It is very difficult for me and it is my decision, I have to live with it. I am very sad – he concluded, adding that “he is still thinking about the possibility of retirement”.

The decision means that Friday’s semi-final will not take place. With the Spaniard’s withdrawal from the game, the Australian automatically advanced to the Wimbledon final.
