In Armenia, the information about the disruption of the transition of the figure skater Medvedeva because of the surname was called a lie

The President of the Figure Skating Federation of Armenia, Melania Stepanyan, appreciated the rumors that the transfer of the Russian woman Evgenia Medvedeva to the national team of the country fell through because of the name of the athlete. Her words are quoted by Sport-Express.

Stepanyan called the information an absolute lie. “I see that it has scattered all over the sites, but there has never been such a conversation. The fact that she changed her surname does not concern us at all. No one has the right to interfere in this decision,” she said. The head of the Federation stressed that Medvedev is loved in Armenia, but there were no official negotiations on changing the citizenship of the athlete.

In 2018, after the announcement of the athlete’s departure from coach Eteri Tutberidze, SNC reported that Medvedev would change her sports citizenship and start playing for the Canadian or Armenian national team. The reason was called a conflict with the coach.

Medvedeva is a two-time world and European champion. At the Games in Pyeongchang, she won silver, losing to compatriot Alina Zagitova. She also became the silver medalist of the 2018 Olympics in the team competition. The athlete began to perform in figure skating under the name Babasyan, but then she took her grandmother’s maiden name and became Medvedeva.
