Chelsea issues statement on behalf of Abramovich and clarifies assumptions of club sale

Since Roman Abramovich announced that Chelsea are for sale, speculation around the world has overwhelmed the club and the media.

This Thursday, the English board issued a statement on behalf of the Russian billionaire and clarified some points about the negotiation.

The first topic addressed was Abramovich’s intentions to donate the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea to charities. According to the statement, those intentions have not changed.

The note then mentions that the Russian did not ask for any loan amounts to be repaid. It also reports that the billionaire has not increased the price of the club.

“As part of Abramovich’s goal of finding a good guardian for Chelsea FC, he nevertheless encouraged each bidder throughout this process to commit to investing in the club as well as continuing the work of the Chelsea Foundation.”

The team has also been suffering from an uncertain future. It runs the risk of not being able to meet its financial commitments due to the sanctions imposed on its owner.

“To be clear, Mr. Abramovich does not have access to or control of these funds and will not have after the sale. Despite changing circumstances since its initial announcement,” he concludes.

Firstly, Abramovich’s intentions regarding donating the proceeds from the Chelsea sale to charities have not changed.

Since the initial announcement, Abramovich’s team has identified senior representatives from UN bodies and major global charities who have been tasked with forming a Foundation and establishing a plan for its activities. The lead independent expert spoke with government representatives presenting the framework and initial plans.

Mr. Abramovich was not involved in this work and was independently managed by experts with years of experience working in humanitarian organizations.

Second, Mr. Abramovich did not ask for any loan repayment to him – such suggestions are totally false – as are the suggestions that Mr. Abramovich raised the Club’s price at the last minute.

As part of Abramovich’s goal of finding a good guardian for Chelsea FC, he nevertheless encouraged every bidder throughout this process to commit to investing in the club – including the Academy, the women’s team, the necessary stadium refurbishment, as well as maintaining the work of the Chelsea Foundation.

Following sanctions and other restrictions imposed on Abramovich by the UK since the club’s sale was announced, the loan is also subject to EU sanctions, requiring additional approvals. This means that the funds will be frozen and subject to a legal procedure governed by the authorities. These resources are still earmarked for the Foundation. The Government is aware of these restrictions as well as the legal implications.

To be clear, Mr. Abramovich has no access to or control of these funds and will have no access to or control of these funds after the sale. Despite the changing circumstances since his initial announcement – he remains committed to finding a good guardian for Chelsea FC and ensuring the profits go to good causes.
