Liverpool visited Newcastle this Saturday morning and emerged victorious 1-0, in a game valid for the English Championship. The team took the lead of the tournament, provisionally, and depends on a stumble from Manchester City to stay in the position.
In the duel, coach Jurgen Klopp chose to spare some holders, such as Salah, Fabinho, Thiago Alcântara and Alexander-Arnold. The triumph came with a controversial goal by midfielder Naby Keita, in the initial stage. The hosts questioned the bid because of a possible foul at the beginning of the play.
The team now turns its attention to the Champions League. Liverpool visit Villarreal this Tuesday, at 16:00 (Brasília time), for the return game of the semi-finals of the tournament. In the first leg, the English won 2-0.
The game – Liverpool took the initiative, but ran into the home team’s strong defense. Newcastle proposed to take away the spaces of the opposing team and seek the exit in speed, with direct connections, looking for the striker Saint-Maximin.
However, it was Jurgen Klopp’s team who opened the scoring in the 19th minute. After scoring with Diogo Jota, midfielder Naby Keita invaded the area, dribbled the goalkeeper and played for the back of the net. The move was a reason for discussion, due to a possible lack of Milner, at the beginning of the play. The referee, however, confirmed the goal.
At 34, Liverpool started to scare again with Mané. Luis Díaz pulled the counterattack and rolled towards the Senegalese, but he hit the hands of goalkeeper Dubravka.
Newcastle even equalized in the 39th minute. The Paraguayan Almirón received in depth, passed the goalkeeper Alisson and swung the nets, but the play had already been stopped for offside. In the final minutes, Jota headed in after a cross in the area and forced Dubravka to make a good save.
In the second stage, Newcastle raised their mark and sought to disrupt Liverpool’s exit. The action paid off in the first minutes, but soon the visiting team adjusted and returned to dominate the match. Then, Klopp sent Salah, Fabinho and Thiago to the field, which increased his superiority.
Liverpool started to find more spaces and piled up opportunities to extend their lead. Salah, Mané and Jota had good chances, but they didn’t hit the net. The team, however, knew how to manage the result.
