Years ago that was exactly what Becker used to do. If the 22-year-old from Wrocław were to follow the path of the German tennis legend, it would be only the professional one. After a German declared insolvency in 2017, the court examined the alleged bankruptcy. During the investigation it turned out that the 54-year-old withheld the funds with which he was able to pay off the debts. Boris Becker was deliberately transferring large sums to other accounts after his insolvency in June 2017 to keep the money out of the prosecution’s reach. The list of hidden assets includes, among others, two properties in Germany, one in London, bills, and numerous loans taken from the bank before filing for bankruptcy.

Becker’s trophies are also on the list of hidden assets. These include cups for victories at Wimbledon in 1985 and 1989, in 1991 and 1996, and a gold medal in 1992. In July 2019, 82 items belonging to Becker were auctioned off, which cost a total of EUR 765,000. However, this allowed only a partial repayment of the debt. When he declared bankruptcy, his debts were estimated at as much as 60 million euros. In addition, Becker was supposed to hide the money he got from the sale of the Mercedes car dealership. In this case, we are talking about the amount of EUR 1.13 million.

The court decided to bring the case to an end and charged the German with 24 charges, but Becker did not plead guilty. In early April, after three days of deliberation, Becker was found guilty on four counts in a bankruptcy trial. These allegations are: sale to the trustee of a real estate in Leimen, shares in Breaking Data Corp, failure to repay a loan of PLN 825 thousand. euro in a bank in Liechtenstein and the transfer of the amount of 430 thousand. euro to different recipients after bankruptcy.

On April 29, the court finally pronounced a sentence of 2.5 years in prison without the possibility of applying for parole. As reported by “Tennis Magazine”, Becker is to be imprisoned immediately after the end of the trial. According to previous media reports, Becker will most likely end up in a higher security prison, where his mental state will be examined. Then he will be transferred to one of the low-security prisons. Then it may be in the so-called an “open prison”, which he will be able to leave for a moment at certain times. Most likely, Becker will also be able to count on some amenities. Above all, however, it may still appeal against the judgment.
