Sergio Higuita, champion of the Volta a Catalunya: With Richard Carapaz we have made a great wear | Other Sports | Sports

Colombian cyclist Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe team) admitted that the victory in the general classification of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya “means too much” for him after holding the lead in the last stage of the race, which ended at the Montjuïc circuit in Barcelona, where Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz took second place in the race.

“I have been working and learning a lot during these two years that have passed since I became a professional. He had made good generals, but he had never been able to lead a World Tour race. Yes, I did it in the Tour of Colombia and there I learned to manage the pressure of being a leader”, explained the winner of the Volta at a press conference.

In addition, his triumph came in one of the most demanding editions of recent years. “It was a very tough race. Every day has been very hard, also today. I like the final circuit of Barcelona a lot, the climb was agonizing”, considered Higuita, who had never done this route.

The most complicated moment was when the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (Ineos), finally second overall at 16 seconds, attacked him on the fifth climb to the castle of Montjuïc. “We knew it was going to be difficult in the final part, but we gave 200% of what we had in our legs. I knew how to regulate myself well and be in a good position”.

Precisely, Higuita and Carapaz starred in the great escape of this Volta on Saturday, which meant that the general classification turned upside down. “I was afraid of losing my legs because yesterday I made an effort with Carapaz and we spent too much”, the Colombian was sincere. But no one managed to take away the final victory. (D)
