The home team controlled more possession in the first half, but West Ham knew how to make better use of spaces and created more dangerous chances than their opponent, opening the score after six minutes with Benjamin Johnson. Aston Villa continued to compete and found the tie in the 33rd minute, with Ollie Watkins. Even so, Declan Rice scored again for West Ham, who held the lead until half-time.
Even needing the result, Aston Villa could not react in the second half and even took the third goal in the 34th minute, with Pablo Fornals. Jarrod Bowen made another one, in the 38th minute, to close West Ham’s rout.
Aston Villa opens the 11th round of the Premier League this Friday, when they visit Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium at 5 pm (GMT). West Ham host Liverpool at the Olympic Stadium next Sunday at 1:30 pm.
