River Plate will sanction an act of racism by a fan who threw a banana at Fortaleza fans

River Plate beat the Brazilian Fortaleza 2-0 in an intense match played on Wednesday at the Monumental stadium, in Buenos Aires, for the second date of Group F of the Copa Libertadores. But the night was marred after a video went viral showing a local fan throwing a banana at his peers from the Brazilian club.

About 4,000 fans of the visiting team were present on the gaucho stage. And, as usually happens in intense duels, there was a confrontation between both fans. This was all thrown out of whack when a local fan threw a banana at rival spectators, treating them like monkeys.

“In the images that circulate on social networks, you can clearly see the face of the man who peels the banana to throw a part of it and then throws the whole peel, to later show them the shirt of the Argentine team. Several of the supporters who are around laugh and even celebrate the action, “reports newspaper Clarion from Argentina.

“Regardless of the decision made by the club’s directors with this fan, the truth is that the institution could receive some type of sporting and/or economic sanction from the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), as happened in 2014 for xenophobic songs”, adds the newspaper.

Meanwhile, River Plate, through a statement published on its social networks, rejected what happened and will apply sanctions to the cause of the event, it announced.

“River Plate expresses its absolute rejection of the racist and xenophobic gestures of a fan towards the visiting bias, and communicates that it is already implementing the corresponding measures to identify the culprit and apply the appropriate sanctions,” the club said. (D)
