Cristiano Ronaldo announces the death of one of the twins he was expecting

Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, who was expecting twins with his wife Georgina Rodríguez, announced in a message on his social networks the death of one of the two babies.

“It is with the deepest sadness that we communicate the passing of our baby,” wrote the Manchester United striker in a message signed with his Spanish partner of Argentine origin.

“It’s the greatest pain any parent can feel. Only the birth of our baby gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness,” added the couple, who had announced they were expecting twins at the end of last year.

“We are devastated and ask for privacy at this very difficult time,” the statement reads.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, 37, is the father of four children, three of them born via surrogacy before meeting his current partner. The couple, who met when Ronaldo was playing for Real Madrid, have a four-year-old daughter.

“Your pain is our pain Cristiano,” tweeted Manchester United. “Sending love and strength to you and the family at this time.”
