In a complicated game at Estádio José Alvalade, in Lisbon, Sporting struggled to leave with a 1-0 triumph against Vitória de Guimarães this Saturday. The result was important and changes the situation of the table in the Portuguese Championship.
With Benfica’s tie in the round, Sporting takes the second place in the Primeira Liga with 26 points added. Vitória de Guimarães follows with 13 points and occupies the seventh place.
Both teams had good chances in the first stage, but Sporting was the one who managed to swing the opponent’s net. Pedro Gonçalves’ first goal, in the 26th minute, was revised and canceled with the help of the VAR. Four minutes later, Sebastián Coates put the hosts in front of the scoreboard.
Vitória de Guimarães team pressured Sporting for the tie in the second stage and managed to stay longer with the ball. Even so, the defensive sector of the current champions played a good game and prevented the opposing actions.
Vitória de Guimarães returns to the pitch for Liga Portugal next Saturday, when they host Moreirense at Estádio D. Afonso Henriques at 17:30 (GMT). On Sunday, it’s Sporting’s turn to visit Ferreira at the Estádio da Capital do Móvel. The departure will take place at 4 pm.
