The Norwegian Federation will boycott the World Aquatics Championships if FINA allows the Russians
The Norwegian Swimming Federation will boycott the 2022 World Aquatics Championships if the International Swimming Federation (FINA) allows Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the competition, RIA Novosti reports.
The president of the Norwegian federation, Kato Bratbakk, stated that this was what the organization wanted, so the proposal was put up for board discussion, which took place on 10 March. “We are in the process of developing a joint declaration for the Nordic countries,” he stressed.
On March 8, the FINA bureau adopted a new charter, which states that Russian athletes and officials may not be allowed to participate in international competitions. At the same time, the organization opposed a complete ban on the performance of all athletes and officials from Russia. FINA considered that the Russians should participate in tournaments in a neutral status.
The World Aquatics Championship will run from June 18 to July 3. The competition will take place in Budapest.
