Striker Patrik Schick will miss the Czech Republic against Sweden in next Thursday’s play-off match for the European Qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup due to a calf injury, the Czech national team said on Monday.
The 26-year-old Bayer Leverkusen player is currently the Bundesliga’s second-highest scorer with 20 goals, behind only Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, from Bayern Munich.
On 18 February, Schick suffered a calf muscle strain in the Bundesliga match between Leverkusen and Mainz 05.
“He returned to training a week ago, but he is only available for collective activities with the team. It is a great loss for us,” commented Czech national team coach Jaroslav Silhavy.

The winner of the Sweden-Czech Republic match will face Poland on March 29 for a spot in the Qatar Cup.
According to Silhavy, Schick could return if his team advances to the repechage final against the Poles.
The Czech striker was the top scorer of the last Euro Cup alongside the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, with five goals.
