CAS refused to postpone the RFU qualifying play-offs for the 2022 World Cup to a later date
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne denied the request of the Russian Football Union (RFU) to take interim measures in the form of postponing the play-offs of the 2022 World Cup qualifying tournament in Qatar to a later date. It is reported by TASS.
Thus, CAS denied all requests submitted by the RFU. It is noted that the consideration of the appeal of the RFU on the removal of the Russian national team and clubs by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the International Football Federation (FIFA) will continue in accordance with certain deadlines and procedures.
On March 7, the RFU sent an appeal to the CAS for the suspension of Russian teams. Feedback from FIFA and UEFA will follow within 20 days. The RFU considered that with a positive outcome of the case, the Russian team would retain chances to play in the play-offs for the right to get to the World Cup in Qatar.
Due to FIFA and UEFA sanctions, the Russian national football team lost its chances to participate in the world championship in Qatar. The team was supposed to participate in the play-offs for reaching the World Cup, but the national teams of Poland, the Czech Republic and Sweden expressed their unwillingness to play with Russian players.
