It wasn’t a nice game. It really wasn’t. The stakes of the final – the title of the champion of the grand tournament at rank 1000 and the promotion to the second place in the world ranking – probably did its job. For sure, both great tennis players were significantly disturbed by a very strong wind.
It did not go away with the wind
It proved its superiority in extremely difficult conditions. She is the best tennis player in the world right now. The WTA Race ranking proves it. In the list of tennis players’ points for this year only, Iga is the first. She became a leader thanks to an impressive series.
Iga has just won the tournament in Doha. And now it was unstoppable. In Qatar and the USA, the 20-year-old Polish woman won 11 matches in a row. This is her best streak in her career. The previous – ten wins – took place at the turn of May and June last year, when Iga won the tournament in Rome and reached the quarter-finals of Roland Garros. There she lost to Sakkari.
“Iga will never break, it will never be soft”
in 2021 she was an opponent of Iga Świątek as out of a nightmare. The Pole played with the Greek three times and lost three times. The last time, at the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, Iga was so devastated by her impotence that in the end she turned her back to the court and cried.
Now Iga is incredibly strong. Not flawless. But she tries to draw conclusions from every mistake, none of them breaks her. This is Iga’s great strength. She makes great use of her character perfect for sports.
– She loves to compete. And great! An athlete who prefers competition is a model […] You always want to face something. Caty McNally, Iga’s friend, also competes with her trainer in everything. They take care of it. However, Iga has it in nature -.
The man who led, among others to her triumph at Roland Garros 2020 and to the titles in Rome and Adelaide, he even compared her to the all-time basketball player Michael Jordan. – Iga is like Michael Jordan who has to win even in tossing a coin. Not everyone is really born with it. As I say – it can be trained, but to a certain extent. And Iga will never break, it will never be soft – he assured.
13 finals, 12 titles! The winner’s gene. Iga Świątek dominates
Let’s look at all Iga finals. The one in Indian Wells was the sixth one played by a Pole in the WTA series. She lost the first, in a smaller tournament in Lugano, in April 2019, to Polona Hercog. In fact, the fans do not remember that three-set match. Because then Iga Świątek did not really introduce herself to the world.
Iga did it in October 2020, winning the Roland Garros. She went through the Paris tournament like a storm, she smashed all her rivals. Final 6: 4, 6: 1 with Sofia Kenin was a good summary.
The next Iga finals looked like this:
- Adelaide 2021: 6: 2, 6: 2 with Belinda Benci
- Rome 2021: 6: 0, 6: 0 (!) With Karolina Pliskova
- Doha 2022: 6: 2, 6: 0 with Anett Kontaveitt
- Indian Wells 2022: 6: 4, 6: 1 with Maria Sakkari
Impressive, isn’t it? And it is worth adding that earlier – in 2016-2018 – Iga played seven more finals of ITF tournaments. She won all of them, in only one she needed three sets.
Iga Świątek has the winner’s gene. These athletes can do great things. They can dominate, which is what Iga starts to do this year.
