Shubenkov spoke about the doping scandal with Valieva at the Games in Beijing

Sergey Shubenkov called the doping scandal with Valieva at the Olympics a leftist “sticky”

Russian world hurdler champion Sergei Shubenkov spoke about the doping scandal with figure skater Kamila Valieva at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. He is quoted by RIA Novosti.

“Some kind of left “sticky”, only at a very important and crucial moment,” the athlete called what happened. He noted that he felt sorry for the skater, who was broken by the situation and who could not successfully perform in the individual tournament. “This happened at the Olympic Games – you don’t know anything, and you have to prove that you are not a camel,” Shubenkov said.

Shubenkov added that the scandal with Valieva is similar to the situation in his life. In a sample of an athlete dated December 15, 2020, a low concentration of the diuretic drug acetazolamide was found. As a result of the investigation, it became known that the positive doping test was the result of Shubenkov’s inadvertent ingestion of the remnants of medicines for the treatment of his son. After this, the suspicions of violating the anti-doping rules were removed, the athlete was acquitted.

The doping scandal around Valieva broke out during the 2022 Games. Her test dated 25 December 2021 tested positive for the banned drug trimetazidine. The World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sought the removal of the figure skater, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed her to participate in the individual championship at the Games, where Valieva took fourth place. At the same time, the IOC postponed the awards ceremony following the results of the team tournament, where the figure skater won gold as part of the Russian national team.
