Transgender swimmer Thomas beats 2020 Olympic medalists at NCAA competition in the USA
American transgender swimmer Leah Thomas won the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The results are available on the league website.
The athlete won the 500 yard freestyle (457.2 meters). She was ahead of Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalists Emma Veyant and Erica Sullivan. Veyant won an Olympic medal in the 400m medley and Sullivan in the 1500m freestyle.
Last December, Thomas broke several national records at a competition in Akron. In the 1500-meter swim, the athlete was 38 seconds ahead of the nearest pursuer, and 14 seconds ahead in the 500-meter swim.
Thomas, being a man, performed for the last time in November 2019. The athlete completed a year-long course to reduce testosterone levels to ensure an equal position for all participants in the tournaments.
On November 17, the International Olympic Committee presented recommendations on the admission of transgender athletes to women’s competitions. They state that athletes should be admitted regardless of gender or gender identity, and detailed criteria for admission should be developed by the national federations themselves.
