The doping scandal around Valieva broke out during the 2022 Games. Her test dated December 25, 2021 tested positive for the banned drug trimetazidine. Valieva’s defense made a statement that doping could have got into Valieva’s body because of her grandfather’s medicine.

WADA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sought to remove the figure skater, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed Valieva to participate in the individual tournament at the Games. At the same time, the IOC postponed the awards ceremony following the results of the team tournament, where Valieva won gold as part of the Russian team.
