Ukraine has been fiercely defending itself against the Russian aggressor for over three weeks. The West will impose gigantic sanctions that have a financial impact on Russians’ wallets. After Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea, Valery Oif has now made a similar decision. The businessman, who has been the owner of Vitesse since 2018, announced his withdrawal from the club.
“It’s a painful goodbye, but in the current situation I am making this difficult decision in the interests of the club, employees, fans, sponsors and other stakeholders. I have always felt very involved with the club and enjoyed its great performances. Vitesse will remain in my heart,” wrote Oif in a special statement.
Last season, the Dutch club took fourth place in the Eredivisie and reached the 1/8 finals of the European Conference League. This season, the Dutch are in sixth place in the table. The club has not been profitable for several years, therefore the new owner will have to pay off the debt. At the moment, it is not known what it is. The club authorities said that the change of owner was to be reasonable.
“A careful procedure is followed when selling the shares to ensure the club’s continuity, and Vitesse can continue to focus on its sporting ambitions,” the website reads.
