pole vaulter Cuban Yarisley Silva will not participate in the 18th edition of the World athletics championship on the indoor track that takes place from this Friday in Belgrade (Serbia) due to problems carrying their own poles.
The Cuban Athletics CommissionerYipsy Moreno, explained to the sports site Jit that Silva could not travel directly from Spain – where he was – to Belgrade because the European Union (EU) establishes that with his visa he could not stay for more than three months.
For this reason, he had to return to Cuba to go to the capital of Serbia, but then he faced a new setback: his personal poles had remained in SpainMoreno said.
He explained that the member of the Athletics Federation in charge of the transfer of these teams was infected with COVID-19 in Spain, which prevented him from being transferred to the 2022 world championship. Other efforts to get the poles delivered did not bear fruit.
“In the face of unexpected circumstances, Yarisley ruled out the possibility of competing with the poles provided by the organizers of the universal contest, because he considered that it would affect his performance and the preparation he had done in recent months”, concluded the Cuban Athletics Commissioner.
Silva, London 2012 Olympic runner-up and gold medalist at the 2014 Indoor World Cup in Sopot (Poland), qualified for the Belgrade event by ranking.
The Cuban delegation to the indoor competition in Serbia, now made up of five athletes, won its first medal this Friday with the triple jump of Lázaro Martínez, with a record of 17.64 meters.
Cubans also compete on this day Maykel Massó -Olympic bronze in long jump-, and his compatriot, the runner Roxanne Gomez who was left out of the final of the 400 meter dash. (D)
