Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Matytsin called the doping scandal with Valieva at the Games a wild accident
Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin spoke about the doping scandal with figure skater Kamila Valieva at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. He is quoted by Match TV.
“Obviously, the athlete had no reason to take this drug, microdoses of which were found. This had no effect on the result of her performances, ”he said. Matytsin called the incident a wild accident and expressed the hope that the investigation of the case would bring a fair result.
The Minister of Sports also answered the question of whether Valieva will continue her career. “Camila has all the physical and moral strength to continue her career. She is psychologically a very strong person, despite her young age,” he said. According to Matytsin, this is the hardest lesson for the skater, but it will make her stronger as an athlete.
The doping scandal around Valieva broke out during the 2022 Games. Her test dated 25 December 2021 tested positive for the banned drug trimetazidine. The World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sought the removal of the figure skater, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed her to participate in the individual championship at the Games. At the same time, the IOC postponed the awards ceremony following the results of the team tournament, where Valieva won gold as part of the Russian team.
