Liga de Quito advances to the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana after eliminating Mushuc Runa

Liga de Quito secured its ticket to the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana-2022 by drawing 1-1 (3-1 overall) with Mushuc Runa this Wednesday in a duel between Ecuadorian clubs.

Alexander Alvarado opened the scoring in the 27th minute of the match played at the Rodrigo Paz Delgado stadium, in the Ecuadorian capital. The whites took advantage of a confusing exit from the defense of the ponchito to get fully into the area.

An assist from Tomás Molina enabled Alvarado to finish off with his right foot and hit Adonis Pabón’s goal. The author of the goal had already warned a minute before his intentions to annihilate Mushuc Runa, a team of indigenous origin whose name in the Quichua language means New Man.

In minute 26, the Ecuadorian player, thanks to a pass from Adolfo Muñoz, had sent a ball that went past the right post of the rival goal.

When it seemed that Mushuc Runa was going to bid farewell to the South American without goals, Mauricio Alonso appeared in the 64th minute to level the match 1-1 with a shot from the right, which went to the left post of Gonzalo Falcón’s goal. The assistance came after a counterattack by Santiago Giordana, one of the ponchito figures in this duel along with Wilter Ayoví.

In the first leg of the first phase of the League competition, they beat Mushuc Runa 2-0.

Although he managed to score the goal of honor in the revenge duel, the tie was a coup de grâce for Mushuc Runa, who said goodbye to his second participation in the regional tournament. The first time he was in the Copa Sudamericana was in 2019.

From the third minute, the whites showed their desire to seal a ticket to the group stage. Ezequiel Piovi was the first to show his teeth with a header that went wide.

The Argentine tried again in the 8th minute. The mid-range shot was a declaration of war and an announcement of the plans for the League, which won the 2009 South American League, the 2008 Libertadores and the 2009 and 2010 Recopa Sudamericana.

However, Mushuc Runa was not far behind and showed that he deserved something more in this match. The ‘ponchito’ team brought intensity, rhythm and strength to the game.

The entry of Ayoví, who replaced an injured Bagner Delgado in the 30th minute, was decisive for the club to recover their spirits after the league goal. In the 61st minute the player, assisted by Rody Zambrano, finished off with his right foot from outside the area and the ball passed very close to the goal.
