Atlético de Madrid and Benfica qualified for the quarterfinals of the Champions League this Tuesday March 15 after eliminate Manchester United and Ajax respectively.
At Old Trafford (England), Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United 0-1 the second leg of the round of 16. The first leg ended in a tie at one (1-1), so the colchoneros continue ahead in the competition. United had possession of the ball throughout the game, generating scoring chances, but ran into a great Oblak, as the Atlético goalkeeper prevented goals from the rival with great saves. Oblak supported Atlético de Madrid and Lodi scored the only and decisive goal (0-1) of the clash in the 41st minute.
At the Johan Cruyff stadium in Amsterdam (Netherlands), Benfica beat Ajax 0-1 and the Portuguese sealed their qualification for the quarterfinals, since the final score of the first leg was tied at two (2-2). Ajax dominated, generating several scoring chances, but the Dutch team’s players were not successful in attack. As the minutes progressed, Ajax lost freshness and speed, a circumstance that took advantage of a Benfica that was stuck behind and defended well, to score the winning goal through Darwin Núñez (0-1) in the 77th minute. Ajax in the final stretch, but Benfica held on well and came out on top.
