Honorary member of the IOC predicted the return of Russia to world sport

Honorary member of the IOC Gerhard Heiberg advocated a dialogue with Russian sports

Honorary member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Gerhard Heiberg assessed the consequences of sanctions against Russian organizations and athletes. It is reported by TV2.

Heiberg called Russia a great sports power and the sanctions an attempt to avoid too much pressure. The official predicted the return of Russia and Belarus to international sports when the situation in Ukraine is resolved. He advocated a dialogue with the Russian side. “At the same time, in order to remove, we must look to the future and prepare for the fact that Russia and Belarus will return,” Heiberg concluded.

On March 11, the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, announced the committee’s intentions to expose organizations and individuals that violated the Olympic truce. He added that sporting events should not take place in Russia and Belarus, as this is contrary to Olympic values.

On February 28, the IOC called for the non-admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions. The executive committee of the organization motivated the recommendation by the desire to ensure the protection of the honesty of the competitions and the safety of their participants.
