The European Union analyzes sanction for Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea

The European Union plans to sanction Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea, on Mondayas part of the new sanctions package coordinated with the G7 against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, they confirmed to EFE diplomatic sources.

The decision to sanction the Russian oligarch comes after the Premier League will strip him of the club’s director’s permit on Saturday after the British government froze his assets last week, preventing the club from generating income from ticket sales, merchandising and player operations.

Abramovich’s inclusion on the new sanctioned list coincides with Portugal’s decision to open an investigation to check whether there were irregularities in the granting of the nationality that granted him as a descendant of Sephardic Jews.

In addition to its incorporation, the new sanctions package which plans to adopt today the EU also contains commercial and financial measures.

Russia is expected to be denied most favored nation status in its marketsrevoking important benefits within the framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO), vetoing the import of key goods in the iron and steel sector from Russia or prohibiting new European investments in the entire energy sector.

Also, the EU countries they want to suspend the rights of Russia as a member of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB)so it could not obtain more loans or benefits from these institutions, as announced on Friday by the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen.

Likewise, they will seek to ensure that the Russian state and its elites cannot use crypto assets to circumvent the imposed sanctions, and they will ban the export of any luxury goods from the EU to Russia. (D)
