Russian doping debunker refuses to believe Valieva’s excuses

Journalist Zeppelt said he did not believe the excuses of the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva

German journalist Hajo Seppelt, who specializes in exposing Russian doping, in an interview with TheSkatingLesson YouTube channel spoke about the scandal involving the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Zeppelt said he did not believe the 15-year-old athlete’s excuses, drawing attention to the fact that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) refused to take her side. At the same time, he clarified that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) might not have known that the skater was doping, which means that the fault probably lies with her coaching staff.

The doping scandal around Valieva broke out during the 2022 Games. Her test dated December 25, 2021 tested positive for the banned drug trimetazidine. Valieva’s defense insisted that doping could have gotten into Valieva’s body because of her grandfather’s medication. The figure skater suggested that the use of the drug occurred through the dishes that she and her grandfather used.

WADA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sought to remove the figure skater, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed Valieva to participate in the individual tournament at the Games. At the same time, the IOC postponed the awards ceremony following the results of the team tournament, where Valieva won gold as part of the Russian team.

Seppelt specializes in investigating the use of illegal drugs by athletes in different countries. From 2014 to 2016, ARD released his films about doping in Russia.
