The board of directors of Higher Sports Council (CSD) has approved the statutes that allow the launch of the first women’s professional soccer league in Spain. The new entity will govern the competition from the 2022-2023 season.
“I think we are in a position to say that we are going to make history because together with the players we celebrate an enormously relevant milestone for the sport of our country. I can finally express, with the utmost gratitude, that the women’s professional soccer league is a reality. The desire of this Government is that a woman presides over the league from birth”, highlighted Jose Manuel Francopresident of the CSD.
The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubialeswas also satisfied with the approval of the statutes: “As long as our rules are met, we will try to move forward. We want this message of education to society, of equality, to sink in and serve so that women and men are always together, not only in sport but in society”.
For the Eibar player, Sheila Elorza, this Monday, March 14 “is a historic day”. He has added that the soccer players have been fighting for a long time for the launch of a professional women’s soccer league, and that in the end they have achieved it. “We hope that it will help other minority sports to follow our path”, concluded the one from Zaratamo (Bizkaia).
