Led by André Jardine, Atlético de San Luis beats the leader of the Mexican League

With two wins and one draw in the last three games, Atlético de San Luis, led by Brazilian coach André Jardine, is just one point away from the Mexican Championship classification zone after beating Puebla, until then leader of the competition, on Sunday night. .

The 2-1 victory was won after the team suffered a draw in the 43rd minute of the second half and, even so, scored the decisive goal in the final bid of the match.

“Incredible and unbelievable for the way it was, and for the opponent. Victories like this mark us, mark the fans and form an identity. I can say that I am very happy with the work and with our team”, celebrated the Brazilian coach, gold medalist in the Tokyo Olympics.

It wasn’t just on the leaderboard that the victory had reflexes. It had been 168 days since Atlético de San Luis had won in their own stadium.

“It is difficult to understand this taboo, these are things that football imposes. Against Chivas we could have finished with that, but it was for today, against the leader”, celebrated Jardine after his third game at the Alfonso Lastras Stadium.

There are already three unbeaten games in Liga MX, obtained in a tough streak. Before beating leaders Puebla on Sunday, Atletico de Jardine had already beaten Monterrey, who played in the Club World Cup, and tied with the club with the biggest fan base in the country, Chivas.

The Brazilian coach arrived in Mexico just over a month ago and found the team in the so-called Zona da
Fine (there is no relegation in the League). The good start took the team to 14th place with 10 points, just one below the classification zone – in all, 12 teams make it to the playoffs.

“Our first objective is to get out of the low zone. We have to think point by point, game by game. The players understood our work and that’s the most important thing. So we have room to grow and pursue bigger things,” she said.

The match in San Luis de Potosi had a strong security system, adopted preventively after the incidents last weekend at the La Corregidora stadium, when Querétaro fans entered the pitch and caused a tragedy, brutally attacking Atlas fans and leaving dozens of seriously injured people.

In a joint effort between the local authorities, the owners of the clubs, Liga MX and the Mexican Football Federation, measures were adopted such as the ban on the entry of visiting fans and the interruption of the sale of alcoholic beverages at the end of the first half, between others.

In the 62nd minute, when the duel between Querétaro and Atlas was interrupted by the invasion of the aggressors, all the matches of the Liga MX round were paralyzed so that the players of both teams made a circle and remained symbolically embraced for a minute, in a gesture greatly applauded by the stands.
