The FIFA has announced that will receive this Monday at its headquarters in Zurich a delegation from Amnesty International (AI) for address the situation of migrant workers in Qatar in connection with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The meeting -says the statement- “will give AI the opportunity to submit a petition asking FIFA to deal with this matterfollowed by a discussion with experts from FIFA and its Qatari partner to review the progress made to date and the challenges that remain.”
“We remain fully committed to guaranteeing the protection of the workers who participate in the works of the World Cup and we are confident that the tournament will also serve as a catalyst for positive and lasting global change in the host country,” said Joyce Cook, Director of FIFA’s Social Responsibility and Education Division.
FIFA stresses that the World Cup “has already contributed significantly to improving working conditions in the region and it is clear that Qatar is on the right track, having introduced far-reaching labor reforms and making substantial progress, in a relatively short period of time.”
The debate -he points out- will focus especially on the situation of workers in the service sector, especially when it comes to hospitality.
“In view of the proximity of the tournament and the progressive decrease in the magnitude of the worksthe efforts of FIFA and its local partners in terms of employee welfare have been increasingly oriented towards this area, which will play a fundamental role during the competition”, he explains.
In this regard, a audit and inspection program for the hospitality sector in Qatar, as well as “due diligence measures for service companies that operate at FIFA tournament venues.”
Dialogue with Amnesty International experts on labor issues will allow deepen this type of initiatives within the framework of the continuous collaboration of the governing body of football with human rights and labor organizations ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, concludes. (D)
