Monterrey beats America 1-0, wins Concacaf Champions League and guarantees a spot at the Worlds

On Thursday night, Monterrey beat America 1-0 and won the Concacaf Champions League for the fifth time. With the title, the Mexican team also guaranteed a place in the Club World Cup.

The match was played at BBVA Bancomer Stadium, home of the team that lifted the trophy. The only goal of the duel was scored by Argentine striker Rogelio Funes Mori, nine minutes into the first half.

The conquest of Monterrey increases the dominance of the Mexicans, who have already won the competition 36 times. The last club from another country to win the “Concachampions” was Deportivo Saprissa, from Costa Rica, in 2005.

To reach the decision, Monterrey eliminated Atletico Pantoja (Dominican Republic) in the round of 16. In the next phase, he dispatched Columbus Crew (USA) and, finally, overcame Cruz Azul (Mexico).

With the title, Monterrey will compete in the Worlds, in February 2022, alongside six teams. Four of them already have a guaranteed place in the competition: Chelsea (England), Al Ahly (Egypt), Al-Jazeera (United Arab Emirates) and Auckland City (New Zealand).
