The 53-year-old coach emphasized that the return to Rostov had been agreed with the Russian Football Union (RFU). He also added that he had an agreement with the leadership of the Rostovites when he left the club in order to focus on work in the national team.

“I used to keep my word, that’s why I returned,” said Karpin. He also drew attention to the fact that his family still lives in Rostov-on-Don. According to him, there were no negotiations with other clubs of the Russian Premier League (RPL).

Karpin led the national team at the end of July 2021 in the status of a Rostov coach, but left the club on August 2. Under his leadership, the national team reached the play-offs for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but due to FIFA and UEFA sanctions, they lost the opportunity to take part in the tournament.
