Russian Paralympian describes suspension from 2022 Games as ‘we got kicked out’

Paralympic Alexey Bychenok compared the Russian team with outcasts due to suspension from the 2022 Games

Russian Paralympian Alexei Bychenok, in an interview with Lenta.ru, described the atmosphere at the 2022 Games in Beijing after the team was suspended.

“They brought buses, made a corridor so that we would not go anywhere. Although it was five in the morning, where would you go? Maybe they thought that we would foolishly destroy everything there, I don’t know … And there was not a soul at the airport, ”he said.

Bychenok also compared the Russian team with outcasts. “There was a feeling that we were thrown out of the Olympic village,” he expressed his emotions with such a phrase.

According to the athlete, after the removal of the Russian athletes, the Chinese team supported. “Wrote messages, approached live, wished good luck, sympathized. They said that the Games without us would be inferior, that they hope that one day we will still go to the start together, ”he added.

The fact that the Russian Paralympic athletes will not be allowed to start in Beijing became known on March 3. Initially, the International Paralympic Committee allowed the Russians to compete in a neutral status, but then changed the decision. The head of the organization, Andrew Parsons, explained this by the position of other national committees, which opposed the participation of Russians in the Paralympics.

Bychenok is the silver medalist of the 2014 Sochi Games in biathlon. He also has two victories at the world championships – one each in biathlon and cross-country skiing.
