O Atletico Madrid received Cádiz, this Friday, at Wanda Metropolitano, and won by 2 to 1, in a game valid for the 28th round of the Spanish Championship.
The hosts went ahead with a goal from João Félix, after goalkeeper Ledesma failed. Negredo, headed, tied the match for the visitors. Rodrigo de Paul was the author of the winning goal for Simeone’s team.
With the triumph, Atlético moves up to third place, with 51 points, 12 less than leaders Real Madrid and three more than fourth-placed Barcelona, which has two fewer games. On the other hand, Cádiz, in 18th position, remains in the relegation zone, with just 24 points.
Now, Atlético turns its attention to the decisive clash against Manchester United, in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League. The match takes place next Tuesday, at 17:00 (Brasília time), at Old Trafford. Cádiz, on the other hand, remains focused on Espanyol and will face Villarreal on March 20, at home.
The game – The hosts did not take long to open the scoring. Just three minutes into the first half, goalkeeper Ledesma played poorly and handed the ball for free to João Félix, who did not forgive and opened the scoring. After the goal, Atlético had few opportunities, the most dangerous was a shot by Carrasco that went over the goal.
On the other side, Cádiz pressed and managed to equalize in the first half. At 45, Negredo received a cross inside the area and headed for the back of the net. Just before Cádiz’s goal, Mandava tackled Alcaraz and was sent off, however, after a VAR review, the red card was withdrawn and the referee cautioned the player only with the yellow card.
Atlético suffered, but secured victory in the second half. At 23, Ledesma saved Ángel Correa’s kick and Rodrigo de Paul took advantage of the rebound to swell the opposing nets. Five minutes later, Oblak went up to cut a cross and Luis Hernández finished in the empty goal, however, Giménez saved with a header over the line and guaranteed the victory.
In the final stretch of the game, Javi Serrano committed a hard foul and was sent off, but Cádiz could not take advantage of the numerical advantage and ended up defeated.
