Anatoly Karpov noted that the chess player Romanov may have problems in Russia
World chess champion Anatoly Karpov appreciated the decision of the Russian chess player Evgeny Romanov to play for Norway. His words are quoted by RBC.
“Russia is the center of the world chess world. After he moved to Norway, he may have problems in Russia,” warned the chess player Karpov. He stressed that he does not blame Romanov, as this is his personal choice. At the same time, Karpov noted that he himself would not have done so.
Romanov announced the decision to change sports citizenship on March 9. The 33-year-old grandmaster said that he is not very connected with Russian chess and has been cooperating with Norwegian coaches for a long time. According to him, he has been associated with Norwegian chess since 2013.
Romanov ranks 335th in the International Chess Federation ranking. In 2013, he became the bronze medalist of the European Championship.
