The World Ski Championships in could be the crowning achievement of the careerwhich won everything in jumping. Everything but the gold of the flying world championship. Unfortunately in Vikersund it disappoints along with other Polish jumpers. Unexpectedly, the best of them at the halfway point of the competition is Jakub Wolny.
Marius Lindvik leads two out of four series of jumps, ahead of Stefan Kraft by 6.5 points. Domen Prevc is third, 19.9 points behind. The best of Poland, Jakub Wolny, is 13th and is 63.5 points behind Lindvik. Right behind him is Karl Geiger. More Poles are far away. Piotr Żyła is 19th, Kamil Stoch is 21st and 29th.
For many fans, the fact that Jakub Wolny is the best of the white and reds may come as a surprise. A slow one who has had an average season. The goal for the 26-year-old was to go to the Beijing Olympics, but he overtook him on the final straight. Then he came under the wing of Maciej Maciusiak, who admitted that he had to set other priorities with the jumpers and make a little more commitment. And it seems like it worked because Wolny ended up in the Continental Cup and started jumping pretty well. He was also on the podium twice in Brotterode and Planica (twice second). The podium in Planica meant that Wolny won a place at the World Ski Championships. In the flights he loves and on which he is doing much better than on ordinary hills.
Maciej Maciusiak is not surprised
– Honestly? I am not surprised. I knew he could afford it. Already in the Continental Cup in Planica and Brotterode he showed very good single jumps and I knew that he would also do very well on the mammoth. Of course, one would like more, but with such jumps it will fight for the number one. The second series was very difficult, many jumpers did not manage. Kuba also needs, above all, silence to use his predispositions.
Wolny finished the World Cup competition in the top ten four times and three times it was the mammoth hill (6th in Oberstdorf, 4th in Vikersund, 10th in Planica. And once he was 9th on the hill in Titisee-Neustadt, one of the largest large It is not surprising that Wolny is doing decently at the World Championships. And the strangest thing is that he is the best Pole anyway. He is especially happy that he has an idea, he has a vision of a jump and he does not have to do anything about it. The most important thing is that he knows what to do. There is no need to cheat that there is no chance on the podium, because we are separated by an abyss, but a place in the TOP 10 it would be satisfying – adds Maciusiak.
Stoch’s nightmare is back. An idea is missing
One of the most disappointed and subdued jumpers on the hill could be Kamil Stoch, who is not doing the third most important event of the season. While the Olympics and the 6th and 4th places can hardly be considered a defeat for Stoch (although he himself said so after the competitions), both the Four Hills Tournament and the ski flying world championships are a technical torment for the Pole. The Stoch has catastrophic inrun speeds, and these immediately translate into a bad take-off and a terrible first phase of flight, in which the jumper gains height but loses speed very quickly in flight.
– The worst part is that there is probably no idea. Unfortunately, you can see that Kamil is a bit overwhelmed by all of this. At this point, Kamil’s technique does not allow him to fight for the top places. At this hill, Kamil is such an average, and for him it can be said poorly. He flies high, but terribly slow in the air, he flies guarded – he analyzes
We know that in Vikersund the team is weakened by the lack of it, but it is hard to suppose that the coach is not in contact with the jumpers. Unfortunately, the jumps of Piotr yy or Kamil Stoch do not confirm this, because they both lost their greatest strengths. Żyła was always an aviator and he flew further on mammoths than on large objects. Unfortunately, this season he loses the most in the chaotic phase of the flight and this also prevents him from flying away on flying hills. Kamil Stoch was always late in jumping, but with a flight he made up for what did not come out on the threshold. Now it flies vertically and loses probably the most speed in the air of the world’s top jumpers.
The dramatic inrun speed of the Poles
Since Thursday, we have been observing with concern the speedometer readings, which tell us that the white-and-reds are by far the slowest running nation at this championship. Today, only Zografski was slower than Kamil Stoch, and the Poles occupied places close to the bottom. The scale of the drama is emphasized by the fact that the fastest of ours was … Jakub Wolny, who is “famous” for his very low speeds. – When it comes to inrun speeds, they are quite good in Kuba Wolny. We know that Cuba can drive disastrously in summer and winter. He is much more comfortable with natural tracks, so he loses more on artificial ones. But here in Vikersund, these speeds are very decent in my opinion. He was never a speed demon. But what he is achieving now is within the limits of decency – says Maciej Maciusiak.
Fans often wrongly say that low in-run speeds are the result. However, this has not been true for a long time. – Now it’s hard to miss with the lubricants. There is pure ice on the inrun on practically every hill. Lubrication itself does not play a big role anymore. The speed now primarily consists of the ski structures, the suit layout and the inrun position itself. More specifically, the head and chest system. It is influenced by many factors. Especially on the mammoth hill, when the inrun is longer and the errors accumulate – explains Maciusiak.
